Exeter hotel gains national recognition for creative cladding

New hotel next to Exeter Rugby club wins plaudits for ‘best use of fibre cement cladding’.

A £40m hotel development next to Exeter Chiefs’ premiership rugby ground has been recognised for its innovative use of rainscreen façade cladding. The 2022 RCI Awards has shortlisted the luxury, 250 bed hotel, known as Courtyard Exeter Sandy Park, as one of a handful in the UK that demonstrate outstanding use of fibre cement cladding.

Supplied by VIVALDA London and installed by TAC Projects, the lower levels of the eye-catching development use Ceramapanel A1 rated panels in two colours from the natural textures touch range (1031 Charcoal and 1021 Light Slate). These façade panels provide an unusual ribboned effect, giving the external walls a subtle, grooved finish, which offers an ideal non-combustible alternative to timber facades.

Andy Thomas, regional director at Vivalda Group, said: “This really is a stand-out project that will bring new visitors to the Sandy Park stadium via a unique fixed bridge link to the rugby ground. Every element of the new hotel oozes quality and this is reflected in the very high specification of the Ceramapanel cladding which was face-fixed using a riveted system.”

The hotel forms a striking landmark as you approach the city, sitting alongside the M5 only a stone’s throw from the stadium, offering fans and businesses alike an all-encompassing experience at Sandy Park.
